Ingredients

  • 2 ½ cups All-purpose flour, spooned and leveled
  • ½ teaspoon Baking powder
  • ¼ teaspoon Salt
  • 1 cup (2 sticks) Unsalted butter, softened to room temperature
  • 1 cup Granulated sugar
  • 1 large Egg yolk
  • 1 teaspoon Pure vanilla extract
  • ½ teaspoon Almond extract (optional, for added depth)
  • 2 cups Powdered sugar (for glaze, optional)
  • 2-3 tablespoons Milk (any kind, for glaze)
  • ½ teaspoon Pure vanilla extract (for glaze)
  • Pinch Salt (for glaze)
  • Red or pink food coloring (gel works best, for glaze)

Method

  1. Prepare Your Workspace: Begin by lining two large baking sheets with parchment paper or silicone mats. Set them aside.
  2. Combine Dry Ingredients: In a medium bowl, whisk together the flour, baking powder, and salt.
  3. Cream Butter and Sugar: In a large mixing bowl, cream the softened butter and granulated sugar together until light and fluffy.
  4. Add Wet Ingredients: Beat in the egg yolk, vanilla extract, and almond extract until well combined.
  5. Incorporate Dry into Wet: Gradually add the dry ingredient mixture to the wet ingredients, mixing until just combined.
  6. Chill the Dough: Divide the dough in half, wrap tightly in plastic wrap, and refrigerate for at least 30 minutes.
  7. Preheat Oven & Roll Dough: Preheat your oven to 350°F (175°C). Roll out one disc of chilled dough to about ¼ inch thickness.
  8. Cut Out Shapes: Use heart-shaped cookie cutters to cut out cookies and transfer to prepared baking sheets.
  9. Bake the Cookies: Bake for 10-12 minutes, or until edges are lightly golden.
  10. Cool Completely: Let cookies cool on baking sheets for 5 minutes before transferring to a wire rack.
  11. Prepare the Glaze: Whisk together the powdered sugar, milk, vanilla extract, and a pinch of salt in a small bowl.
  12. Decorate Your Cookies: Once completely cool, dip or drizzle the glaze over the cookies.

Notes

To keep cookies fresh, store in an airtight container at room temperature for up to 5 days. Freeze undecorated cookies for up to 3 months. Baking one batch at a time ensures even cooking.
