  • 2 tbsp fresh lemon juice
  • 1 cup granulated sugar
  • 1 tbsp all-purpose flour heaping
  • 0.5 tsp ground cinnamon
  • 0.25 tsp kosher salt
Topping
  • 1 cup all-purpose flour
  • 1 cup packed brown sugar
  • 1 cup chopped walnuts
  • 0.25 tsp baking powder
  • 0.25 tsp baking soda
  • 1 pinch kosher salt
  • 8 tbsp salted butter melted
For Serving
  • vanilla ice cream or warm caramel sauce optional but recommended

Method

  1. Preheat oven to 350°F (175°C). Lightly coat a 13x9 inch baking dish with salted butter.
  2. Place sliced apples into the baking dish. Drizzle with lemon juice and gently toss to coat. Press into an even layer.
  3. In a medium bowl, mix sugar, flour, cinnamon, and salt. Sprinkle over apples and toss gently to coat.
  4. In a separate bowl, combine flour, brown sugar, walnuts, baking powder, baking soda, and salt. Stir in melted butter until crumbles form.
  5. Sprinkle the topping evenly over the apples without pressing down.
  6. Bake for 55–60 minutes until topping is golden and apples are bubbly. Let rest 15 minutes before serving.

Notes

Mix topping just until crumbles form overmixing can cause a dense texture. Use foil if topping browns too fast. Place dish on foil-lined sheet to catch drips. Try a mix of apple types for depth of flavor. Serve with ice cream, whipped cream, or caramel sauce.
