Ingredients

  • 2 ¼ teaspoons active dry yeast
  • ½ cup warm milk (dairy or unsweetened almond milk)
  • ¼ cup granulated sugar
  • 1 large egg, room temperature
  • 2 tablespoons unsalted butter, melted and cooled
  • ½ teaspoon salt
  • 2 ½ cups all-purpose flour
  • Vegetable oil for frying
  • ½ cup granulated sugar for coating
  • 1 teaspoon ground cinnamon (optional)

Method

  1. Activate the Yeast: In a large mixing bowl, combine the warm milk and ¼ cup sugar. Sprinkle the active dry yeast over the top. Let it sit for 5-10 minutes, or until foamy.
  2. Combine Wet Ingredients: Add the egg, melted butter (or coconut oil), and salt to the yeast mixture. Whisk together until well combined.
  3. Add Flour & Knead: Gradually add flour, mixing until a shaggy dough forms. Knead for 5-7 minutes until smooth and elastic.
  4. First Rise: Lightly grease a bowl and place the dough in it, covering with plastic wrap. Let rise in a warm place for 1-1.5 hours, or until doubled.
  5. Shape the Donuts: Punch down the dough and roll it out to ½-inch thickness. Cut out donut shapes using a cutter.
  6. Second Rise: Place the cut donuts on floured parchment and cover loosely. Let them rise for 30-45 minutes.
  7. Prepare for Frying: Heat oil in a deep pot to 350-360°F. Use a thermometer to monitor the temperature.
  8. Fry the Donuts: Fry 2-3 donuts at a time for 1-2 minutes per side until golden brown.
  9. Drain & Coat: Remove and place on paper towels. While warm, toss in sugar and cinnamon mixture.
  10. Serve Immediately: Enjoy fresh and warm Homemade Sugar Donuts.

Notes

Make sure to check the yeast activation temperature. For a healthier option, consider baking the donuts instead of frying them.
